The main reason for my belief is that if the purpose of blue lies is to bind together “in” group members and exclude “out” group members, then the accuracy or truthfulness of those lies probably doesn’t matter to those in-group members. As long as the blue lies serve the function of tying the in-group members together and exposing out-group members, then they have value just as they are. Exposing the lies would only emphasize the fact that the speaker is a member of the out-group and can, accordingly, be disregarded or (as we have seen with some groups) mocked. Groups don’t naturally give up their common lies unless they have a stronger, more compelling, reason for doing so, such as the arrival of a common enemy that requires the combined efforts of both in- and out-group members to defeat. While it is true that for in-group *scientists*, the arrival of opposing facts will often be enough to change group allegiances, I would argue that most people don’t become scientists unless they have decided that facts (i.e., scientifically valid evidence) matter more than preconceived notions. After all, that’s why they devote their lives to investigating those facts. But most people are not scientists, nor do they wish to be. Most people, apparently, wish to remain secure in the notion that they are still part of their in-group. Indeed, scientists can be seen the same way, since in science, unlike in most other fields, having one’s false beliefs exposed does not necessarily threaten that one will be kicked out of the group. To the contrary, scientists rarely shun other scientists merely for holding to false theories: because identifying false theories is simply part of the process.

Perhaps therein lies the solution. Perhaps the way to bring groups (of non-scientists) together is not by exposing their respective falsehoods, but by ensuring that group membership is not threatened by having their respective falsehoods exposed.
